Margaret M. Hynes, PhD, MPH
Dr. Margaret Hynes is a Supervising Epidemiologist at the Connecticut Department of Public Health’s Surveillance and Reporting Unit, Health Information Systems and Reporting Division, where she oversees surveillance of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and health professional shortage areas. She currently directs the Connecticut Health Disparities Project, a two-year $539,317 grant funded by the Connecticut Health Foundation, whose purpose is to enhance the statewide infrastructure for documenting, reporting, and addressing health disparities among racial and ethnic minority residents of Connecticut. Dr. Hynes received her Masters of Public Health and a PhD in Sociomedical Sciences and Sociology from Columbia University. She has extensive training in both qualitative and quantitative research methods, and has worked on several large national and regional research projects related to health inequities. Dr. Hynes is the lead author of two key Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) reports addressing health disparities: the 1999 reportMulticultural Health: The Health Status of Minority Groups in Connecticut and the 2005 report Mortality and Its Risk Factors in Connecticut, which evaluated racial and ethnic disparities across a ten-year period for 62 causes of death.
